The new fine arts building proposed for the UCI is designed to support and promote the creation of art. Planned as a collaborative environment to foster the interaction of artists from many disciplines, the building functions will revolve around a central enclosed Arts Commons that will serve as an informal instructional space, an exhibit space and a gathering spot for pre-function and fundraising activities.
The project is designed to harmonize with the existing fabric of the campus while providing a unique design statement that celebrates the performance and exhibit spaces contained within. An exterior skin of cast-in-place concrete, brick, metal and glass is proposed to meet the UniversityÆs requirements for a 70 year building with 20 years deferred maintenance and features a defined tripartite system that responds to existing buildings on campus. A new lobby of glass and steel soars to a height of 52Æ and will act as a beacon when lighted at night for performances in the adjoining black box theatre or exhibits in the adjacent display gallery. The project is designed to attain a silver LEED rating and features natural flow-through ventilation in the public common areas along with energy-efficient building systems and construction materials that feature high recycled content.
