The exciting new Downtown Educational Complex includes construction of a K-5 Elementary School, a program-based High School, a combined Child Development Center, a TV Station, and a Community Health Clinic located on several parcels of District land in the Lake Merritt "Channel Area" of Downtown Oakland. The Complex is designed to be a CHPS Certified Project, with the goal of achieving grid neutrality.
The new Elementary School will accommodate 360 K-5 students in a two-story administration and classroom building along with a separate kindergarten wing. A Great Room serving as a cafeteria, gymnasium, and multi-use space with a stage will be shared by all schools. Adjoining the Great Room are the Health Clinic, TV studio, and the District IT Data Center.
MetWest High School will accommodate 180 high school students in a two-story complex designed around a double-height "town hall" space. The Child Development Center will accommodate 168 students in seven classrooms with the licensing-required outdoor play area. Designated kindergarten play area, shared playfield, community edible garden, and on-grade parking round out the project.
All three schools are integrated in one complex but each maintains its own identity with separate designated entryways. Each school has separate drop-off zones to ease the traffic during peak hours. The buildings are linked by a "learning walk" that passes through all the essential spaces which serves as an educational instrument for the students of different age groups.
