MVE Institutional worked with administrators, maintenance personnel, teachers, coaches and parents to create a needs assessment and master plan concept for the Redondo Union High School campus. The architectural style of the existing buildings span over several decades, from Art Deco Industrial Arts to the modernist Auditorium and Band building. The history of the buildings contributes to the tradition and culture of the campus, which the design team respected and preserved throughout the process.

Many of these buildings are in need of significant renovation or replacement to meet current codes and standards. While the majority of the campus will be renovated, there are several new buildings that have been incorporated into the master plan, including a Gym & Aquatics Center, an Athletics Field House and a Student Services building which combines both student facilities and administrative offices. The master plan also addresses several overall site planning issues including parking, vehicular and pedestrian circulation and the development of a campus quad.

From the onset of the design process, sustainability was a high priority for the district, staff, community members and design team. The many modernization projects re-use as much of the existing structural shell as possible, while replacing HVAC and lighting with new efficient systems, adding insulation, and replacing old windows.

The Student Services Building and Gym & Aquatics Center have been registered as LEED projects, with each targeting a LEED Silver rating. The Student Services Building includes both a planted green roof and photovoltaic array on the second floor, which are visible and accessible to students. The Gym & Aquatics Center has a solar collector heating system which works with the computer-controlled pumping system to provide the required heating and cooling needs for the pool itself, saving the district over $50,000 per year in gas and electricity costs. In addition, over 80% of the existing buildings to be removed will be recycled.
